I love a good bargin: clothes on sale, free drinks, and home furnishings for little or nothing. Raised on a simple allowance and a love for stuff, my thrift shopping days began early on. Luckily, I met a guy who loves the concept as well. There is nothing like a Saturday morning tag sale scavenger hunt to keep the romance alive. We also work together at a local bar in town, mere minutes from our apartment. While browsing tag sales one day, we came across the perfect item that would prevent the age old question from being continuously repeated in the bar: what beer do you have?
Here was our simple solution:
Shelves.
Simple enough, but when I tell you how many times I’ve stood in front of a customer mono-toning what beers we serve to just have them stare back at me while trying to make a decision while others around them wait impatiently to be served, this tiny addition to our bar did wonders for bartender mentality.
It was a random find. My boyfriend and I were doing our usual Saturday morning tag sailing after breakfast at the diner; we had just rented an apartment together and it badly needed odds and ends. The black wooden shelves were $5 each. As we contemplated keeping them all to ourselves, the idea occurred to us to put them up in the bar that same night while working.
Customers still ask what beers we have, but now instead of memorizing an entire line of products, we simply point, smile and thank our lucky $5 tagsale find.
