I just received a fantastic tip from one of my readers in Texas and I’m really excited to share it everyone.
When you’re having a garage sale, make a display of “man things” close to the street. When women drive by, they’ll have an easier time convincing their husbands to stop and shop around a bit. Even if you don’t have any male oriented objects, you should be placing your big ticket items – ie. bicicles, furniture, lawn equipment – closer to the street. That way, any one doing a drive-by to scope out your sale will be more tempted to stop and get out of their car.
On a side note, I recommend the drive-by tactic for all garage sale shoppers with a tight schedule. Drive past the sale and peek out the window before you bother parking your car. If the sale seems small, it might not be worth your time. While this can cause you to miss out on a rare item, if you’re in a time crunch, it just isn’t worth your time to stop at a tiny sale when a larger one might be up the street.
If you sell a large item but your buyer can’t take it with them immediately, label it with a big “SOLD” sign. Seeing that the big ticket items are moving will encourage even more sales. Plus you’ll still be able to use the item to draw in those drive-by shoppers!
