Gift season seems to come upon us faster and faster each year. With the economy so unstable and with such insecurity in the government and new health care laws, people are more eager than ever to stretch their dollars.
I have always believed in being creative when it comes to giving gifts. And a garage sale may be the perfect place to start to put some gift ideas together for Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries and any other occasion.
Sometimes an experience can be a gift (such as a spa treatment, tickets to a sporting event, even a night at home with a hand made certificate for a massage or to clean a house for an ailing relative, etc etc). Oftentimes baskets, tins or other types of items can be found at a garage sale. Why not fill a basket, a chest, an old, interesting box, or some other interesting container with some favorite things on a theme for an experience gift? It is a unique way to give and may have a greater perceived value than something store bought.
Another idea is to create a theme gift. Let’s say you want to give a gift to someone who enjoys fishing, gardening, snorkeling, etc. Go on a garage sale hunt for items to include in a basket or box that are part of that theme. Put a nice bow on it and voila.
The point I make is that a small budget can often provoke big ideas and more creativity and a garage sale is a perfect place to bring your creativity to life rather than bemoan the fact that you may not be able to buy every gift at an expensive store.
I can tell you when I have gone this route and found very unique gifts, it is long remembered and appreciated.
