Who’s getting ready for a flea market adventure this weekend? In this weekly round up we cover stories of what’s happening in the flea market industry from around the county. Here’s what’s going on in your neck of the woods:
Port Chester, New York – After more than three decades of serving the Westchester County and greater Metropolitan area of New York, the Empire State Flea Market is closing. No clear details are available for what will happen to the space or the more than 150 vendors the Flea Market was home to.
Norfolk, Virginia – Beer and and flea market enthusiasts unite! That is the talk of the town in Norfolk this week as their City Council learns about a new business proposed for downtown Granby Street that has been described as a flea market style shopping event with beer sales. The idea was sparked from an earlier event this year called “Better Block,” which “transformed part of Granby Street into a hip avenue of bohemian business,” according to one local news station. The organizers say the process of creating this event and getting permitted has been a challenge but they envision the space could host dozens of artists and merchants, hopefully fostering a fun new selling platform for local small businesses and individuals.
Nebraska – Trail of Treasures and Junk Jaunt present a weekend of back-to-back excitement for pickers, junkers, flea market enthusiasts and bargain shoppers! Junk Jaunt started in September 2004 and is a 300-mlle continuous yard sale in central Nebraska. According to 2012 statistics, nearly 20,000 people from 34 states attended the event and brought thousands of dollars in revenue to small towns and local economies along the route. This year the Trail of Treasures (October 4-6) is followed by Junk Jaunt, set for September 27-29. Tina Reed is the Executive Director of the Hebron Chamber of Commerce and says “The goal of Trail of Treasures is not to make money for the association but to promote tourism and provide a boost to the local economies.”
Saint Germain, Wisconsin – Commencing each year on Memorial day and running each Monday through Labor Day, the Saint Germain Flea Market in Wisconsin draws some of the largest crowds as it is one of the biggest single-day markets in the state and helps fund several local civic organizations. But for Wisconsin, the fun doesn’t end there. On Tuesdays, the action moves to Boulder Junction. On Wednesdays, it’s Rhinelander and Three Lakes. There are markets in Land O’ Lakes, Manitowish Waters and Rhinelander on Thursdays, Minocqua on Fridays and Saturdays, and Lake Tomahawk next to J.J.’s Sports on Saturdays and Sundays.
