Shopping Thrift Stores to Score Bargains on Gift Accessories

Our “Fabulously Frugal with Gifts of Thrift” December theme kicks off today with Hilary Rushford, Founder of Dean Street Society, where she works as a personal stylist for “real people with real budgets.” Hilary shares some tips on shopping thrift to score deals on thoughtful gifts.

Thrift stores can be a great spot to score accessories as gifts. Women’s silk scarves for the neck or hair, and menswear such as ties, bow ties & suspenders are generally inexpensive pieces with no worries about purchasing the right size. Flea markets are ideal for sussing out monogrammed items since many sellers pedal handmade wares. A necklace, pair of cufflinks or journal instantly feel personal & thoughtful when the receiver’s initials are included. Second-hand shops are also a great place to find vintage frames that look well-loved, unique & are inexpensive & can then be filled with personal photos or artwork to make it personal. The key to purchasing used items with class is to make sure they are either well-made, truly have a vintage sensibility (not just a few years old or discarded junk) or to make them personal & creative with the receiver’s initials or photos of family and friends.
