This is a great article we wanted to share with our readers, showing first hand how effective garage sales can be when it comes to reusing and recycling items.
Unnatural Resources Garage Sale Encourages Recycling
Published by The Daily Reflector, 11.16.10
Of the three environmental Rs, reducing and recycling are easy. At least that’s what members of the Unnatural Resources Institute say. The Pitt County organization attempts to inspire residents and students to make the third R, reusing, fashionable and fun by hosting programs, forming clubs and developing unnatural resource fairs of all sizes that promote reusing. It encourages using imagination and creativity to keep solid waste out of landfills and give it new life.
Unnatural Resources held a community-wide garage sale Saturday that raised more than $850, said President Jacquline Ponder. The items weren’t the trash to treasure-type products seen at the annual fair, but passing on unwanted items to new homes still counts as reusing.
Profits from the garage sale will go toward renting the Greenville Convention Center for 2010 Eastern Carolina Unnatural Resources Fair, which is scheduled for Jan. 29-31.
Ponder has been an advocate for reusing and recycling for more than a decade and said she’s finally seeing people begin to change their wasteful habits.
“The human seems only to do things if someone else is doing it,” Ponder said. “Slowly but surely … being green is catching on. It’s not a fad, it’s a reality.”
