What factors determine the choice of Ukrainian youth in favor of Polish higher education institutions |
Education in Poland as a way to emigrate?
What factors determine the choice of Ukrainian youth in favor of Polish higher education institutions? Oksana Zagakailo talks about this in an article for the publication “Mirror of the Week. Ukraine ".The number of Ukrainian youth in Polish universities is growing rapidly. Last academic year, there were more than 20,000 full-cycle programs in Polish universities alone. Ukrainians. This is 6 thousand. more than in 2013/2014 Ukrainians make up almost half of foreign students in Poland. What factors predetermine the choice of Ukrainian youth in favor of Polish universities? According to the General Directorate of Statistics of Poland, last academic year there were 20,693 Ukrainians in Polish universities alone in programs culminating in the issuance of a diploma. Seven years ago – only 2 831. At the same time, master’s studies prevailed. Over time, more and more Ukrainians began to enter Polish universities immediately after school. One of the reasons for the rapid growth of the number of Ukrainian youth in Polish fictional narrative ideas universities is the active policy of the Polish government and educational institutions themselves, which is focused on the internationalization of education.Polish universities are experiencing a decline in the influx of students due to the demographic pit and the departure of Poles to study in Western Europe and North America. Since 2006, Polish universities have begun to record a gradual annual decrease in the number of their students. Since then, this figure has decreased by 28%.Therefore, attracting foreign students is considered as a source of additional funding. Private educational institutions are especially focused on it. There are 306. They are the most actively advertised in Ukraine, using the services of a wide network of recruiters-intermediaries."By the way, most Ukrainians go to private universities – 60%. And this is a negative signal. In the Polish educational market there is still a belief that private schools are synonymous with low-quality education. They are quite weak compared to public , in particular, such grands like universities in Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, Lublin, Torun, Gdansk. Especially they lose in terms of scientific work, without which it is extremely difficult to maintain high quality educational services, "said Egor Stadny, an expert at the Center for Society Studies.Another notable trend is that the social sciences are most in demand among Ukrainians: economics, management, PR, etc. "Two thirds of Ukrainian students enroll in such specialties. For comparison: only one tenth of engineering majors, including IT. This ratio does not reflect the division by industry in Poland or Ukraine as a whole. Social sciences predominate in many countries, but not so much "- Yegor Stadny draws attention. In addition, those who study social sciences and humanities, especially in private universities, are called "future unemployed" in Poland. The Polish government is already openly talking about the inexpediency of training in such specialties due to the oversaturation of the labor market. However, aggressive marketing still affects Ukrainian youth. Determines the choice and price, which depends on the university, city, specialty. In general, education in Poland for Ukrainian students is the most accessible of all desired countries of study."First of all, there are many opportunities for Ukrainians to study for free. Those who received a Polish card are equal in rights to Polish citizens. For them, full-time studies at state universities are free. By the way, the number of Ukrainians of Polish origin in Polish schools is growing significantly. If seven years ago there were about 700 full-cycle programs, the last known figure for 2013/2014 was almost 2,000 people, and there are almost two dozen different scholarship programs for Ukrainians, covering not only the cost of studios., but also the cost of accommodation, meals, etc. "- says Yegor Stadny. So, on the one hand, Poland goes beyond its own interests, and on the other – the rapid growth of the number of Ukrainians in Polish universities is due to the motivation of the Ukrainian youth, demand.Unfortunately, there are no studies that would represent the motives for all Ukrainian students to study in Poland. However, some trends from the surveys available to us can be traced. This year, Dr. Petr Dlugosz conducted a survey among Ukrainians studying at the State Higher School of Eastern Europe in Przemyśl and the private Higher School of Informatics and Management in Rzeszów (250 respondents). Most of them are from Western Ukraine (60%). There were also students from Central Ukraine (34%) and the East (6%). The average score of the certificate is 9.5."When asked what motivated Ukrainians to come to study in Podkarpackie Voivodeship, most students said they wanted a European degree. In second place was the opportunity to see the world. Many pointed to the lack of corruption in Polish universities. Training in Poland, as well as career growth, followed by a higher level of education and teaching, the opportunity to be better realized … The relatively common answers included the security factor – remoteness from the war. Some respondents directly stated that training is an opportunity to go beyond frontier "- says Dr. Peter Dlugosh. In this study, students were also asked to evaluate the conditions of study in the universities of Podkarpackie Voivodeship. The technical equipment of educational institutions – access to the Internet, computerization is estimated above all. In second place – the work of deans and the attitude of teachers to students. Ukrainians rated the level of teaching at universities lower. The following indicator is a red signal for Ukraine. "Only 13% of students surveyed at Rzeszów Private University and 16% at Przemyśl State University intend to return to Ukraine after graduation. Most said they did not believe in positive change in the homeland, that the state was still ruled by oligarchs, and that the Maidan was leveled. " emphasizes Peter Dlugosh.About half want to stay in Poland. 41% of private school students and 23% of public students plan to migrate to another state. Most often they want to go to the United States, as well as Germany and England. The study of motivation to study abroad was also conducted among graduates of schools in the border Drohobych district of Lviv region (in 2013 – 584 respondents, in 2015 – 400). Executor – sociologists of the Department of Law, Sociology and Political Science of Drohobych State Pedagogical University. Ivana Franko. The priority of educational mobility, according to the survey, is the Polish university."As follows from the results of the survey, the educational plans of graduates are extremely clear intentions to continue their studies abroad.
